Tip of Borneo, Sabah – Malaysian Borneo – December, 2014

The last time we were in Kota Kinabalu we didn’t have time to visit the Tip of Borneo. So this time around we decided to go and check it out for a couple of days. We took a shared taxi from Kota Kinabalu to the town of Kudat. The owner of the little place we stayed at was away and his sister was taking care of things.  She picked us up in Kudat and took us to the bungalow, she was quite a character and super friendly. The bungalow was okay and it was new but it wasn’t really close to anything. We had to rely on their shuttle to take us to their restaurant (Tip Top) at the beach where we could hang out for the day – that was kind of a pain because we don’t function well with a schedule anymore.

From Tip Top Restaurant on Kalampunian Beach we were able to walk to the Tip of Borneo. We spent a bit of time here looking around. This is an area where two major oceans meet, the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. If it’s not too hazy you can see the Philippines from here.

It’s very windy at the tip and so it makes for a very popular surfing spot. We spent quite a bit of time lounging in the restaurant and just watching people surf. The beach was nice but we found it too rough for swimming and probably at certain times of the year it would be better. It was stormy during the time we visited but we didn’t mind, it was still a great spot to just relax.
