Since we love to hike and in support of the Kimberley Trails Society, we entered this years ‘Round The Mountain’ event. You have the option to run 10k, run 20k, mountain bike 20k, or trek 20k – we chose to trek the 20k. The route takes you through various terrain around Kimberley’s North Star Mountain and showcases the diverse network of trails that are on offer here. It was a fantastic event that finished with live music, food, and beer gardens.
The trekkers were the first group to start at 7am, there were 108 of us. The trek starts with a steady climb for around 2.5km which thins out the trekkers before getting to the single track portion of the course. After the long hill which is more or less the ski hill service road, you move onto single track for most of the way. The day started out kind of socked in with cloud cover but the sun did eventually come out. The temperature was perfect for a hike like this where you push yourself to go as fast as you can.
There were 3 ‘Aid Stations’ in total at 6k, 12.5k, and 16.5k. They were all awesome and supplied sports drinks, water, fruit, cookies, nuts, and candies if you wanted to take the time to stop and graze…which we quickly did. Aid Station 1 was very welcoming as you can see in the photo.
After passing aid station 2, there are a series of rockslide areas to cross but if you take it easy through this section then you won’t have any issues. We heard stories of someone going over the edge of the rockslide!
After the last aid station we had anticipated it to be flat terrain to the finish but to our surprise we had quite a climb at the end – oh my aching legs! We were very happy to see that finish line!
It was time to sit down, relax, and enjoy the rest of the afternoon watching the other racers finish.
This was a fun event that we will most likely do again and we were happy with our time – 20k in 3:51 😊
It’s really incredible the network of trails that are in and around Kimberley. You could literally do a different hike every day all season. For me Kimberley is a good place to be!
