Our ship docked at Corfu Town. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an interesting past. Corfu had a 400-year Venetian presence which made it have more of an Italian feel. The town sits in-between 2 forts, the Old Fortress and the New Fortress. First we walked over to the New Fortress. It was built between 1572 and 1645.
We meandered through the old town while slowly making our way to the Old Fortress. Corfu’s old town has many narrow lanes lined with shops and small cafes. It’s quite compact and easy to walk everywhere.
It’s interesting that some of the old buildings are merely a facade. Nature is slowly taking over…
The Old Fortress was built in the early 15th century. We enjoyed walking around and the views from the top of the hill are beautiful.
After the fortress we walked around the Palace of Saint Michael and George. It was built between 1819 and 1824 by Maltese stone masons.
On our way back to the ship we saw some nice swimming spots, I could have just jumped in – if only I would have worn my bathing suit!
We had a great day in Corfu!
